“Blithe Spirit,” written by Renaissance man Noel Coward, is the season opener for Syracuse Stage. Depicting the uproarious happenings  when a ghostly wife haunts her novelist husband to hilarious degrees, this comedy is a period piece and a laughter showcase.

But in order for any of this to happen, there needs to be costumes. Gretchen Darrow-Crotty, the costumer for Syracuse Stage, is able to transform fantastic fabrics and creative designs into functional pieces of stage magic.

The costume shop, located in the bowels underneath the Stage, is stocked with all the tools and weapons that the platoon of stitchers, fitters and cutters could need. And even with “Blithe Spirit” opening this week, the costume shop’s staff were still preparing for the show.

And throughout the interview with Darrow-Crotty, that seemed to be the major theme: the work never stops for the costume shop. But she wouldn’t have it any other way.
