Daddy’s First Gay Date Review

28th October – 16th November 2025

Daddy’s First Gay Date, a hilarious, heart-warming and, at times, heart wrenching exploration of identity, self-acceptance and coming out later in life is running at Seven Dials Playhouse until 16th November. My friend Scarlett and I went to see it on Thursday evening and if you’re looking for a night out in Soho that will leave your cheeks aching with laughter, I suggest you get tickets while you can.

…a hilarious, heartwarming and, at times, heart wrenching exploration of identity, self-acceptance and coming out later in life

Ben and Helen have been together for 15 years but in the space of one evening, their lives change forever. Ben announces that he is bisexual and interested in exploring his sexuality with men, conveniently meeting Tim (played by Dior Clarke whose performance is exceptional) on the same evening Helen announces that she is pregnant. Although the timing is far from ideal, they begin to navigate their way through their separate and shared challenges in a way that’s believable, relatable and incredibly watchable.

From start to finish, the audience were in hysterics thanks to the very clever and thoughtfully considered dialogue which not only did a good job of placing the play up north, transporting the audience across the Pennines, but it also encouraged the audience to consider and reflect on the themes they were addressing.

The scenery was simple yet highly effective when it was subtly moved to create a restaurant, a nightclub and a car which added to just how lovable the play and its characters was.

So if, like me, you enjoy refreshingly honest and delightfully funny productions, you will not want to miss Daddy’s First Gay Date as it one of the most honest and funny ones I’ve seen.
