Ena Begović Interview

Ena Begović Interview, writer and performer of ‘Bloody Influencers’ at Edinburgh Fringe, 2025.

Q. Ena, tell us a bit about your show ‘Bloody Influencers’, and where we can see you perform.

A. Bloody Influencers is an award-winning one woman theatre comedy with a dark twist that follows ups and downs of a social media influencer in search for her true self. You can catch it at Greenside Venues, Lime, from the 1st to the 9th August.

Q. Have you performed at Edinburgh Festival before, and what are you looking forward to?

A. Last year was my first time experiencing it with improv comedy BATSU, only for a week. I also did one single night of my show with Free Fringe. I’m now looking forward to finally fully experiencing what it is like bringing my show to the Edinburgh Fringe from initial preparation to doing a nine-day run.

Q. What is your background, and how did you come to write the show?

A. I’m a trained actress and during my MA in Acting for Stage and Screen we had a task to create a one-person show of only 25-30 min. After my studies, I felt brave enough to extend it to a 50 min show and started contacting venues in London. The process of creating a story was through a series of workshops. I developed the story and made some drafts where writer Ben Mansbridge then gave the script its final shape and form.

Q. It has been described as a dark comedy – tell us a bit more about this.

A. There is definitely a lot of dark humour in the show, whilst it has light and bright parts, it does not shy from the more complex and dark side of human nature. It will make you laugh at the modern age in relation to social media, but then it also has a dark twist to it. If Black Mirror was a comedy, I could maybe compare it to that.

Q. Tell us about what you like and dislike about social media.

A. What I like about social media is the ability to easily stay in touch with friends and people you meet, it can be handy for networking too. Also, it’s quite a good platform for creatives to express their talents and even get visibility. The downside to it… and there are few, but I’ll pick my favourite: I think it often highlights the social pressure to appear better than you are. In a world without social media, you would face those changes too, due to for example class differences. But on social media those images and stories follow you constantly with many not even being real.

Q. What do you hope the audience will take away with them?

A. I guess I hope the play provokes the audience to be able to laugh at society but also to question and reflect on where we are going…

Q. Have you faced any challenges with getting your production on stage, and how have you overcome them?

A. The initial process was quite smooth, I developed the story, worked on my drafts, got feedback, found a writer to further develop the text, worked with a director and boom! But bringing production to Edinburgh Fringe has been much more challenging, mainly due to funding. I had to wait two years to be able to afford this, and that’s alongside crowdfunding. I want to use this opportunity to say thank you again to those who support me in spirit and with donations!

Q. What are your plans for the rest of 2025?

A. I will reflect upon how Fringe goes. I do have the ambition to see the play evolve with a screen adaptation. However, if that’s not possible, I’ll probably begin the next steps towards some new projects.

Bloody Influencers runs until 9th August at 236. Greenside @ George Street, Edinburgh
