Rotus: Receptionist of the United States Review

Jul 30th – Aug 24th 2025

A cosy, curtained-off space with atmospheric lighting and gentle music playing lulls us comfortably into the world of The White House, before we are hit with the unstoppable presence of Chastity Quirke.

A blast of political satire which will have you laughing from start to finish

We are immediately thrust into a tidal wave of energy that is the all-American patriotic girl next door Chastity Quirke played by the outstanding Leigh Douglas for Suzanna Rosenthal Productions. “Hands up who loves freedom?”  She is The White House receptionist and a proud Republican, serving her close “personal friend, the President of the United States” Ronald Drumph (we were laughing already).  She is the face of The White House front desk and her glossy veneer is there to keep everyone happy – Oval Office staff, opposing politicians and even high school groups “Jesus loves the hot ones”.

For Chastity, no price is too high to prove her loyalty to the cause and if that means crushing democrats, boyfriends, or socialism then so be it.  She is a girl who knows what she wants…or does she? As the plot unravels, she is forced to choose between the power of female friendship and proving herself as the ultimate guys’ girl, and the consequences serve up a large dose of Republican reality.

Douglas is a force of nature, seamlessly embodying a whirlwind of personalities from harried interns to delusional dignitaries, all orbiting around the show’s unlikely hero: the White House receptionist. She goes from nought to one hundred in three seconds and that highly impressive full throttle energy, mixed with razor-sharp wit and an impeccable sense of timing, gives us a performance that has us laughing from start to finish.  Bouncing off her own voice-over of inner thoughts, Douglas guides us, with generous helpings of inside information, through the back-stabbing, egotistical path of Republican politics.

It’s satire with heart, high-concept comedy with surprisingly grounded moments, and a refreshing take on the political machine that feels both timely and timeless.

Huge credit must go to Suzanna Rosenthal Productions and Leigh Douglas for bringing us what has to be one of the hits of the fringe this year.  If you’re looking for something original, wildly funny, and sneakily profound, ROTUS is your ticket. Don’t miss it.
