The Christmas Thing Review
4th – 21st December 2024
Like many other families across the UK, we look forward to sitting down and watching the Christmas specials every year. The Christmas Thing, which is running at Seven Dials Playhouse until the 21st of December, has everything a good Christmas special needs: laughter, love, a healthy dose of suspense. But, unlike your usual Christmas special, The Christmas Thing is being broadcast nowhere to absolutely no one.
“The humour was clever, reactive and relatable whether you were happy, sneezy or inebriated”
And like all good Christmas specials, no expense was spared. The ticker ticked. Roaming reporter, Puppet Steve, reported live from Lapland. There was rhythm, algorithm, a touch of synchronised dancing for good measure and an Act 2 walkaround.
The humour was clever, reactive and relatable whether you were happy, sneezy or inebriated – three of many potential moods listed on the Google form we were encouraged to fill out when we arrived and the audience were fully immersed from the start.
Above all, like all good Christmases it was suitably chaotic especially when it became apparent that Krampus – Santa’s mythical half-man, half-goat bad cop – was on the loose in London. Naturally, in any crisis situation, there are three key rules to follow: only leave the room if you need a drink, a wee or you want to buy some merch.
Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the little donkey, Kevin, The Christmas Thing was an absolute joy. You could even go as far to say it was simply the baste so if you’re looking for an evening of festive fun this December, head over to Seven Dials Playhouse, revel in the Christmas lights and kick off the festivities with something a bit different.
