The Improvised Shakespeare Show

9th – 13th July 2024

What do polyamory, Southend-on-Sea, and a hall of mirrors have in common? They all played an instrumental part in the construction of Shake it Up!’s Improvised Shakespeare Show at the Other Palace. Unluckily for you, it is probable that none of these plot lines will ever crop up again due to the nature of the improvisation of every performance.

“The whole performance was the distillation of high camp, filling every second to the brim with slapstick and adultery”

In the basement of the theatre (the Studio), six improv actors took recommendations from the audience in a rather pantomimish fashion to drive their performance. By writing lines, electing Shakespearean genres, and choosing rogue locations, the audience influenced the next few hours of commotion and hilarity.

The performers put on a show that is incomparable to anything else I have ever watched, somehow curating an incredibly engrossing plot line off the cuff. Laughter rippled and roared throughout the crowd, spurred on by the incredible comedic chemistry that bubbled amongst the ensemble cast. This incredible dramatic and farcical harmony rivalled that of any Shakespearean relationship, giving miserable Romeo and Juliet a proper run for their money.

The whole performance was the distillation of high camp, filling every second to the brim with slapstick and adultery. It was refreshing getting to watch a cast who were enjoying performing as much as those who were watching. At times, the whole experience did err on the side of slightly surreal but perhaps that is simply the nature of improv and the charm of the discipline.

Haunted by the memory of childhood parties in which a clown would pick me out of the crowd and ask me what balloon animal I would want fashioned; it is safe to say the warning of audience participation set my teeth on edge. By the end of the rather bizarre affair, I felt an urge, although fleeting, to slip into a pair of mustard tights and join in the hash of foolery. I would recommend to anyone in need of a bit of light-hearted fun in this summer of rain.
