The Musical of Musicals (The Musical): Matty Hurst Interview
20th & 21st May 2025
Q. Matty, tell us about The Musical of Musicals (The Musical). What is its history, and why have you decided to produce this?
A. The Musical of Musicals (The Musical) is a brilliantly clever and hilarious show that takes one simple storyline, a struggling ingenue unable to pay their rent and reimagines it in the styles of five iconic musical theatre composers.
It’s a (very funny) love letter to musical theatre and an absolute treat for both die-hard fans and casual theatregoers. The show first premiered Off-Broadway in 2003 and has since developed a cult following. We’ve been working with the writers and we’re very honoured that this will be a brand-new, never-seen-before (in the UK, at least) premiere version of the show!
When the opportunity arose to bring it to the Phoenix Arts Club, it felt like a perfect fit. An intimate, cabaret-style venue known for celebrating musical theatre and live performance. It’s the ideal setting to showcase the wit, charm, and sheer theatrical joy of this show.
Q. What can the audience expect from a night at Phoenix Arts Club if they go to see this?
A. Expect an evening of musical theatre brilliance, where every number is packed with clever references, comedy, and stunning performances.
You’ll hear styles inspired by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Kander & Ebb, all cleverly wrapped up in a show that’s as playful as it is intelligent.
Plus, being at the Phoenix Arts Club means a fantastic atmosphere intimate, immersive, and with that special touch of theatrical magic. (Plus, I’ve heard the food, and drinks table service are amazing too!)
Q. Tell us about the creative team behind the production.
A. We’ve assembled an incredible team that’s passionate about musical theatre and bringing this show to life. The cast have worked really hard at both the comedy and the intricacies of each musical style being parodied, ensuring it (literally) hits all the right notes.
Speaking of, the musical direction is in expert hands with Jack Bennett. Whose focus has been on delivering the show’s vocal and musical demands with precision and flair. And of course, the production team are working tirelessly to create an unforgettable experience for audiences.
Q. Who can we expect to see performing?
A. We have a phenomenal cast! Each performer is not only a fantastic singer and actor but also has the versatility to tackle the show’s multiple musical styles. (And there are five!)
The cast brings energy, wit, and impeccable timing, making this an unmissable theatrical event.
Whether they’re playing an over-the-top character, a more classic musical theatre role or a Cat, they’re all phenomenally talented and audiences are in for a treat.
Q. What is your involvement?
A. I’m producing and directing this joyous piece of work! A show that celebrates musical theatre in such a clever and entertaining way and everyone on the show, cast, creatives, production team, are truly amazing! We have some very exciting things to share. Watch this space!
Q. How did you get into producing – what is your background?
A. I’ve always loved theatre, and my background has been a mix of performance, creative development, and producing. As an ex-performer, I found myself drawn to producing because it allowed me to bring exciting theatrical projects to life, from concept to performance. I’ve always admired producers and their tenacity (sometimes in the face of great resistance!) and I love the challenge of making theatre happen, whether that’s staging a large-scale pantomime or an off-west end musical theatre parody (hint hint, book your tickets now!)
Q. Why should people buy a ticket to see The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)?
A. Because it’s an absolute treat! Whether you’re a musical theatre aficionado or just love a good night out, this show delivers non-stop entertainment, wit, and stellar performances.
It’s a joyful, clever, stupid, and laugh-out-loud tribute to the world of musical theatre. Plus, the cast are a RIOT! Even if musical theatre “isn’t your thing” come and see the cast because they will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. It’s a limited run, so don’t miss out!
