You, Me & The Fit Bloke Next Door Review
Until 23rd August 2025
Ruth and Freddie met on Hinge. They chose each other and, like many other newly graduated twenty-somethings, they are trying to figure out what they want to do with the rest of their lives.
Ruth has dreams of being a writer but she is working in Waitrose’s customer service department and Freddie, who studied engineering, is a carer.
“thoughtful and hilarious dialogue…tackling several uncomfortable topics in a believable and relatable way, brought to life through brilliant acting”
As they battle the highs and lows of cohabitation, they meet Alex — the Fit Bloke Next Door, who also happens to be their landlord.
For the next 50 minutes, Me. You. And the Fit Bloke Next Door explores themes of identity and sexuality; the systemic problems facing women’s health; and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
The set was simple yet very effective. The kitchen table turned into a bed, then back into a table, and the small railings which teetered on the edge of the stage did an excellent job of representing a dodgy balcony.
What impressed me most was how successfully they switched between flats as the play went on, with small and considered lighting changes tricking the audience into thinking they were experiencing two different apartments.
And all of this set the stage for the thoughtful and hilarious dialogue that followed, tackling several uncomfortable topics in a believable and relatable way that was brought to life through brilliant acting.
Lottie Burgess’ performance as Ruth was outstanding. Her every emotion and every pain in a way that resonated with the audience.
Without giving too much away, I will also say that Arran Kemp’s performance as Alex was equally impressive and my friend and I both agreed that our blood was boiling as we left The Courtyard Theatre in Shoreditch, which doesn’t happen very often.
Unfortunately, their short run at The Courtyard Theatre as part of Camden Fringe is over for now but I’m certain it won’t be the last we see of them so keep your eyes peeled for what’s next.
